24% Efficiency Solar Cells May Realize In The Near Future

The global capacity to generate electricity from solar panels, wind turbines and other renewable energy technologies has been growing steadily over the past few years, and by 2026, global renewable energy generation capacity is expected to grow by a further more than 60% from 2020 levels.

This is equivalent to the current combined generation capacity of fossil fuels and nuclear energy worldwide. According to the International Energy Agency, by 2026, renewables will actually account for 95% of new global electricity capacity, with solar photovoltaics alone providing more than half of that electricity.

A German research group has developed a tandem solar cell with an efficiency of 24%. Conventional solar cell technology, based largely on the semiconductor silicon, is now considered "best of breed". Their efficiency has increased significantly. In the U.S., more electricity can be generated for every watt of solar radiation collected—nearly impossible. Therefore, it becomes even more necessary to develop new solar energy technologies that can make a decisive contribution to the energy transition. In this work, two such alternative absorbent materials were combined. Here we use organic semiconductors, which are carbon-based compounds that conduct electricity under certain conditions. These are paired with perovskites, based on lead-halogen compounds, which have excellent semiconducting properties. Both technologies require far less material and energy to produce than conventional silicon cells, making it possible to make solar cells more sustainable.
