Chearper Solar Cells Are On The Way

Traditional solar cells are made of silicon, which has good efficiency and stability but is relatively expensive to manufacture and can only be fabricated on rigid panels.

New solar cell devices that are cheaper and easier to make could soon make their way to market thanks to materials made at Imperial College London.

Perovskite solar cells offer an interesting option; they can be printed with ink, are low-cost, efficient, thin, light, and flexible. However, they lag behind silicon solar cells in efficiency and more importantly in stability, failing under normal environmental conditions.

A new metal-containing material called ferrocene could help solve these problems. Researchers from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have added Imperial-made ferrocene to perovskite solar cells, dramatically improving their efficiency and stability. The findings were published today in the journal Science.

Co-author Professor Nicholas Lang, from Imperial's Department of Chemistry, said: "Silicon cells are efficient but expensive, and we desperately need new solar devices to accelerate the transition to renewable energy.
